Hello from Basingstoke

Postby chwalters » 03 Sep 2011, 14:06

I'm a Yank living near Basingstoke, love to BBQ as much as I can but not a competitive BBQ'er.

I've enjoyed BBQ'ing fish (including a whole salmon once!), chicken, steak, burgers, veggies, and all sorts (xmas-Goose, haggis!), used to have a Big Green Egg in the USA before we moved here but my son broke it with a baseball bat (with the lid off it looked like a t-ball stand - this might be something only a Yank would understand?)

I'm @chwalters on Twitter.

Welcome, Dr Sweetsmoke is a fellow yank and just down the road from you in Swindon. Gutted about your egg, I hope he's still grounded!!

Welcome to the Forum, shame about the BGE. you can buy them over here if that is any consolation.

Look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody.

I haven't seen any mention of "beer can chicken" is that considered gimmicky? We"ve always had nice results so might post on that. Also, pounded chicken fillets with soy marinade wrapped around asparagus spears, yum. Believe that is of Japanese origin although I learned of it from a New York Times article.

Most have done beer can chicken as part of their right of BBQ passage, I still do them for a quick low fuss dinner. Not tried your chicken spears, will have to give them a go when asparagus is back in season.

Welcome - What is the "Ch" for... Chris? Charles?

IMHO the BBQ experience is as much about hot roasting for a meal as it is about low and slow and competition. Keep up with the Beer Can Chicken and I for one would be interested in your other recipies too. I am sure that most of us do it even if they dont post about it online.
As you know the BBQ is a versatile beast and can be used for a wide range of food preparation... Last night mine was being used to smoke several Kg of cheese and today it has a salmon in it cold smoking. Yesterday morning it too was cooking Beer Can Chicken.

'ch' is for Chris

Just posted first recipe over in 'beef' - although it was a combo recipe with chicken for fajitas! Sounds like everybody does the beer can thing already, good to know!
