New to smoking- not to food :) - Newbury way

Postby pugwash » 23 Aug 2013, 13:39

Hey All,

Just looking at getting into smoking after a trip to NY where some friends took me to Blue Smoke (if that's the correct name)- it was just amazing.

Have been to Bodeans' soho, which was ok, but not right, and very disappointing that it all seemed to be microwaved from bags.

I'm currently looking at buying an Excel 20 either new or secondhand.

Have quite a lot of experience with fast food (founded a chain of very high quality chippies), so this is rather the opposite end of the scale, and really looking forward to learning new techniques.

There are a couple of butchers in and around Newbury so i'm hoping one of them can get the cuts i'm looking for.

Thanks

Jim

Jim,

Can't remember the name of the butcher on the bridge, but he was great when I worked in Newbury & he was always interested in what I had planned for my meats.

HI Matt,

Yep griffins family butcher- they are great as long as you get the right bloke at the right time- ie when they aren't manic!

Their meat is always god though, and very well priced.

Thanks,

James

Welcome James - just up the road from you in Lambourn. We should be able to connect the smoke signals along the M4 soon....

Hi Jim, just down the road in Hermitage. Let us know if you find any "gems" meat-wise round here, won't you? I've been to a few farm shops where the prices made my eyes water. Usually rely on trips to the wholesalers... there's some decent butchers setting up in the market place some days though, and as you mentioned the guy on the bridge is good.
