Hello from York!

Postby CHokKA » 13 May 2014, 08:24

Hey everyone

I'm Dom and I'm from York. I'm fairly new to smoking, but definitely not new to the BBQ :) I'm originally from South Africa, my family moved to England almost 15 years ago, so BBQing or braaing is a way of life for me. When the weather permits it, you can find me outside cooking up a storm on my Weber :) In fact, on Sunday night I was out until 10pm cooking a home-cured pork loin. I just felt the urge to BBQ it instead of cook it in the oven, despite the rain coming down hard :) I actually ended up propping up the patio garden set umbrella up over the Weber. It worked a treat. My next project is to build a smoking / BBQ shelter so that I can smoke and braai in all types of weather.

Last year I bought myself a ProQ Excel and my first attempt at smoking a pork shoulder went horribly wrong, but I've resolved to make it work properly this year. So with that in mind, I recently placed an order for about 40kg of various types of charcoal. When that arrives I'll be diving back in again and this time I'm going to make sure it is all done properly :) I have also just recently treated myself to a new Weber MasterTouch, although I haven't had a chance to put it together just yet.

Anyway, I look forward to posting and maybe even contributing to the discussions on the forum, as well as perhaps attending some events in the future.

Hi JamsCowbell

I sure do hope so! I reckon it'll be a crash course on smoking as much as possible, but making sure I get it done right at the same time. It is something that I've wanted to master for a very long time. I know it won't take a summer to do that, but I am sure I can learn a lot and have some fun whilst I'm at it :)

Hi Tiny

Awesome to hear that you have a Potjie and a Skottel :) I have a Potjie in the shed as well, although I've been looking for a suitable tripod and firepit to be able to use it with. How do you use yours?

How do you find the Skottel? I'm thinking about buying one for my Dad. He used to love his when we had it over in SA but he couldn't bring it over when we emigrated as it was rather old and had seen better days. I don't think he knows you can get them here so it'd be a nice surprise :)

Hi Dom,
I have an Cadac carry chef deluxe which came with an skottle, this also has the ability to take a potjie over gas. If using charcoal I just stand it in my fire pit and put a few coals around and a couple on the lid. When discussing Potjie with an SA pal at work he pointed me at an "all things south African" shop near Bournemouth that sell specific gas adapters at about £45, sure if you search the interclacker it will be an easy spot.

The skottle saw many an fantastic breakfast when we used to have a little camper van......

Cheers

You shouldn't need a tripod with a proper potjie - it has legs

This Potjie was brought with us all the way from SA so it is proper in all senses of the word, but I don't have a firepit nor anywhere that I can make an open fire safely so I've been looking at tripod systems that I can use to hang it over the coals in my Weber, or a firepit unit that I can purchase. I don't want to put the Potjie into the Weber because the Potjie I have is a size 4 which is quite large and very heavy when filled with what you're cooking so it would probably cause my Weber to buckle and fall apart!
