A day of Bar-B-Q shack

Postby eater of food » 30 Apr 2012, 17:31

I'd like to extend a big thanks to John Hargate aka joker smoker as, although he was away at Ray Lampe's workshop, a friend and I had a fantastic day of barbecued delights in Brighton on Saturday, along with a nice number of great craft beers at Cask and elsewhere.

We started out with Bar-B-Q at World's End for lunch.

Between the two of us we had a rather nice selection of food.

The brisket was just beautiful - tender, moist and smoky while retaining its own flavour.
The ribs were probably a touch more cooked than at competitions so came off the bone quite easily, but the meat was tender and had a great flavour.
The pork was pure sex. Sorry I can't be more specific.
The hot wings were sticky and hot, the mac n cheese smoky and packing great depth of flavour (maybe a touch salty for my tastes but not anything to stop me wolfing it down like a whore with bills to pay).
The armadillo egg was a real treat - really strong flavour and an absolute pleasure - was a topic of conversation for the rest of the day.
The chips and onion rings were chips and onion rings. I almost forgot they were there.
The honey-based sauce was sweet and delicious.

Ended up at just under £32 for the both of us, not including beer, which I consider excellent value for the array of treats we amassed. I will shy away from sullying the names of other barbecue restaurants with comparisons, but it's fair to say the experience was better than I've managed to find around, say, Fulham or Soho.

We came for top-notch barbecue and we got it.

After a day enjoying the festivities of the pier alongside the beers on offer from Brighton's pubs, we found our way to The Globe, with stomachs just about ready for a sandwich and another beer or two.

My esteemed accomplice went for the pulled pork sandwich with chips and onion rings, while I settled on the KC Combo sandwich (brisket, pork and hot-link sausage), without aforementioned upgrade.

It came with a really lovely potato salad and some crisps I was willing to eat too.

Sauced up the sandwich with a different, but very nice (accomplice suggested better), sauce from at World's End (cannot remember what it was as had been drinking all day by this point.)

The meats were generous, succulent and full of flavour and the soft, white roll the perfect mop.

I daresay The World's End will be enjoying my custom again soon. And The Globe is serving delicious sandwiches on the same street as Cask. A repeat performance is in the pipeline.

So, in summation, a great day of barbecue. But then what else would I expect from our man John?
