UDS Drum question

Postby engvall » 21 Jan 2014, 11:50

Hi guys,

First of all, great site you have going here, I've found loads of useful information browsing the forums!

I have a question regarding steel drums for a drum smoker build. I live in west London (hammersmith area), and I've been having some troubles finding an unlined steel drum.
I've found a drum on ebay for a reasonable price including delivery. Trouble is, I'm not sure if it is unlined or not. I have asked the seller, but he doesn't know either.

Can you tell from these pictures if the drum is lined or not? It doesn't look like plain steel to me.
Or does anyone perhaps know a good place near London where I can find unlined drums?

Cheers,
Tobias

Hi Tobias
From the picture it looks to be unlined as normally the lining is coloured.
Contact the seller direct and ask him if the inside of the drum is metal or what looks like a resin coating.

Try local garages for old oil drums, just give them a good burn out and they are safe to use, but watch out for ones that have had fuel or anything combustible in they could still contain flammable vapours if they are the tighthead type.

Hi there

I'm not sure of their prices but there is a drum and barrel company in London - http://drums-and-barrels.b99.co.uk/vict ... drums-ltd/

Note that drum you linked to is not as large as a lot of UDS build guides are written for, so if going for that one, make sure you scale your plans accordingly.

Worth trying that barrel company first - I got a shotblasted food grade drum for £15 from a drum company up here, so you might get a bigger drum for similar money.
