How to store my BBQ?

Postby PDC7 » 08 Jun 2014, 13:28

Gents, got my weber kettle yesterday and now I'm at a bit of a loss on storage, when its cool I have no problem putting it in the shed but I'm wondering if it can be just left outside?

I have a vinyl cover that I can use (obviously only once it is cool) but how do you guys store yours? If I leave it outside uncovered will it rust? If I leave it outside with vinyl cover will it grow mould? Is it safe to store in a shed when not fully cool? I just don't know what to do for the best? I don't want to damage my new Q

Mine is coming up to two years old. The first winter it say outside. The second winter except for when it was in use and maybe a day or two after it say under the vinyl cover and under another tarp with the other barbecues. All was fine except the roses tin I have as an ash catcher which is starting to rust through onto the ali ash catcher. Time for more sweets!

As for mould, use it often enough it wont. If you're storing it for winter then clean the barbecue and then season it to prevent rust on the grates and it's a go. Oh and don't put the lid down on concrete as you might scratch the enamel.

Outside uncovered is fine, the cover itself is not waterproof, it just keeps the worst of the weather off. The enamel on a Weber is good and will not usually rust, if it does that's where the warranty kicks in. You are best to let it cool and then cover, if it gets wet it gets wet, it will be fine. To prevent mould just crack the top and bottom vent slightly to allow air movement and try not to store covered in grease or food residue. When I had mine I would also open it right up and let the temperature go up once I'd finished cooking and fully burn the charcoal out and in turn nuke any food residue etc... At the end of the day this is a BBQ and designed to be used outside, if it was one the cheap unbranded ones I'd worry but it's a Weber and built to last

All my weber kettles live outside and uncovered. I've never had mould in a kettle. If I'm not using it for a prolonged period of time I tend to remove the cooking grills, clean them them and store inside. I had a little surface rust on one kettle lid but that cleaned off with a little WD40.

I do cover my WSMs as they get water inside them if uncovered.

As per JECs suggestion I tend to do a burn off after a cook

My kettle and WSM are both outside with covers on, they have both been rained on several times without covers on and they're still in good shape.

I cover in the provided Webber cover for both my WSM and One Touch and leave them outside.

I used to leave my old Weber Bar-B-Kettle outside with the provided cover but now that I've got my MasterTouch I'm a little bit more protective over it and I keep it in the shed with my ProQ Excel :)
