Leicestershire Cookoff competition

As there are a few Leicestershire people on the forum I though this may be of interest: http://leicestershirecookoff.co.uk/ - not a BBQ topic per-se but no reason why Leicestershire's "county dish" shouldn't be BBQed, smoked, marinaded or grilled. Not sure I'll have time to enter but if I do I'm thinking along the lines of sausages (I make my own), possibly smoked using the old-biscuit-tin-on-the-hob method, possibly involving some cheese... OK more thought required as you can see!

I'm away for the final ....not saying I would reach the final but pointless me entering. Are you entering? Got an idea for you to try if you are.

Going to trial something over the weekend, if it's good I might at least fill in the entry form. Have a feeling they'll want something a bit unusual to win (despite what they say on the site) to get PR coverage, whereas I'm inclined towards a more 'democratic' and straightforward dish like a pie.

I suppose the not-very-famous Quorn Bacon Roll might stand a chance as the shire's signature dish - except I imagine most people will think of Quorn the veggie product rather than the village. Quorn? With bacon?! Eh!

I think you are on the right track with either pork or bacon, and a pie of some kind feels right.

Your comment about folk mistaking Quorn the village with Quorn the the veggie product is noted. But perhaps that fulfills the "something a bit unusual" aspect, and you could play that up - "it might be called Quorn, but it is not vegetarian".

I would really go with that, or perhaps a variation on it - it's traditional, but you could also have a bit of fun with it.

If you look on the entry form there is a 'quirky' catagory (i think that's what it's called).
If I was doing it I would do Tandoori chicken kebabs (representing Leicesters Asian element), with a blue cheese (stilton) dip (similar style to buffalo wings). Don't know how it would turn out but I like the idea.
If you want to try that let me know how it goes. Or bring some round to try :D
