PitmasterIQ iQue 110

Postby wade » 01 Nov 2011, 22:03

Whilst in St Louis a couple of weeks ago I picked up a couple of iQue 110 units direct from from PitmasterIQ. They are quite compact units however as they unfortunately resembled Semtex blocks and det cord to the airport scanners I nearly didnt make it out of the country. I have not seen them mentioned much here on the forum however I think Adie has one and really rates them.

I gave it a dummy run last weekend on the Weber 57cm Kettle and at first was rather disapointed... However then I stopped and read the instructions (yes I know that is admitting defeat!) and i was stunned how well it worked. It kept the kettle at 121 Deg C (250 Deg F) for 9 hours +/- 2 Deg C (4 Deg F) with only one small top up of Heat Beads and a piece of Oak. I was following one of Myrons pulled pork shoulder recipes and it turned out very well - apart from maybe being a little too salty for my taste from either the Hog Injection or the butchers brining.

I could not see any reviews of the iQue here on the forum but if anyone is interested the next time I cook with it I will take photos and write a short review.

This is a picture of the iQue from the Pitmaster IQ web site however it has now changed design slightly.

I've had one for this season now and reccomended it to Adie. Wish I had known you guys were interested because if you had gone through me I maybe could have a arranged a bit of discount similar to Adie but not to worry. It is a fabulous bit of kit and I have had no problems so far. If you don't want digital display and the ability to hook it up with your computer its the dogs doodah's. We are even on their website on the testimony (or something similar) page.

If we have access to a discount maybe a group buy is in order, would make an excellent Christmas present and could save on postage etc... Automatic temperature controllers really do have an advantage during the winter months

Mine was excellent but died when it got soaked during an unexpected rain shower

If that is the case I would be prepared to ask the question...we can only try.

There is a bit more of a difference between the Stoker and the Pitmaster, as you can control upto 5 smokers now with the Stoker, and you can also attach as many food probes as you like to the Stoker, which cancells out the need for Mavericks (which i know the new mavericks have caused many issues at the last couple of competitions).

Then there are other features like turning your smoker to a holding chamber automaticly, so if you're away from you cookers and your meat has hit the correct temp' inside the Stoker will lower the temp' of the cooking chamber to stop cooking the meat anymore, just keeping it at that target temp' till you are able to sort it out.

Finally you do get some good software to play with like Stoker log & there is also an iPhone app' now to allow you to monitor and control you smokers when you're away from the pit.

Don't get me wrong the Pitmaster is a great device, but if you want to control more than one smoker the Stoker might also be worth considering.

I was lucky enough to have a loan of a stoker for a month during the summer, a friend from the US had to come over for an extended work trip. It is by far superior to the iQue on all but one front the cost, the fan, probe and adaptor required for each smoker costs more than the iQue alone without factoring the cost of the stoker itself. Now don't get me wrong I would buy one tomorrow for the iPhone control and keep warm feature alone if it wasn't for the fact that the money is currently required on my long term project. I'm currently running 2 units at the same time and having to run 2 seperate controllers really wouldn't be a show stopper and for the average backyard warrior with a bullet or kettle would never need the extra features for anything other than bragging rights or a simple desire to have the best of everything

Did you "pop the question" so to speak?, as after my last wind shear fiasco I think I need something like this
