Could you guys recommend me a good thermo to start off with?

Seems like Thermapens (http://thermapen.co.uk/) are the way to go if you want something to probe your meat & take the temperature really quickly. Very accurate, reliable & also register the temperature quickly unlike cheaper alternatives which take an age to get to the true temperature. Think Steve is sponsored by these guys. You can sometimes get a good discount on re-conditioned ones on ebay directly from ETI - you just might not get as wide a choice of colour

If you want some kind of remote thermometer i.e. a sending / receiving unit with temperature probes that stay on the grill & in the meat, then Maverick (http://www.maverickhousewares.com/et732.htm) seems to be the go-to product. I bought the older model (ET73) as I saw some discussion about the new probes dying a lot - and it is a little cheaper.

I bought both of these on the recommendation of people on this site so I expect them to work well as these guys have loads of experience using them.

After having several different brands I cannot recommend the thermapen enough, if you can pick up one of the ones sold on eBay direct from ETI then the cost saving of one of the alternatives just doesn't make sense. If you're looking for a remote unit then I would go for the older maverick unit, the ET-73, the extra cost for the other one plus the current reliability issues doesn't justify the extra money
