How to tell my neighbour "your doin it all wrong"

Postby jay75 » 09 Jun 2012, 17:45

Obviously I don't want to upset him but........ Yet again we have just had to close all the windows and doors coz of the disgusting stench of cheap n nasty ready lite and or lighter gel additive as he attempts to enjoy a BBQ which will also smell just as bad! I really would love to help him out but don't really know him that well or how to inform him that it's not the best he can provide for his new family, suggestions please! :?:

Simples - invite them round for a BBQ. You can get to know them and show them how it should be done over a few beers....

I hear ya but won't it seem a bit like I'm Showing off... He is a little bit older, might be put out, we do have similar work backgrounds tho, we both work with our hands if you understand, we can be a little set in our ways.

Invite him over as you have an interest in BBQ yourself, then tell him that you read an article on the carcinogenic risks of liquid starter and since then you've used (insert method here) which is safer, healthier and less smelly.

I don't have that problem, no-one else does BBQ around here, leastways I've not seen any "smoke signals" nor smelled anything similar, good or bad.

You could lead by example and invite him over to have a go at smoking - sorta, "Hi mate, seen you BBQing and wondered if you wanted to come over and have a play with my smoker over a few beers" - when you light up with a chimney or whatever, and it's quicker and less expensive (no need for fluid) and the food doesn't taste of oily robot balls, he might just convert without any awkwardness.

You're probably being a bit dramatic, I don't think it's that bad really, but you could always present him with a box of lighter cubes and a chimney starter....

I don't live near Jay75 so I can't say how bad it is, depending on where he lives there could well be adjoining boundaries so the smell will be atrocious. in the past I've had to suffer by attending family & friends BBQs that have smelled as bad as Jay says added to burnt and raw food (sften on the same item).

i no longer have neighbours but in my previous address we invited some of them round for a bit of an england footie bbq (and i dont like football) and once they have seen the array of bbqs they will realise you know what you are doing and start copying you or asking advice.
