I see a few more people on here using Pellet smokers this summer, so I was hoping for some feed back before I make the plunge.
Smoke wise are you happy with the flavor profile they produce?
Any one use one in comps? and what you using to run one without a direct power source?
thanks
Philip

Hi
Sorry taken so long to reply been a hectic few days.
I smoke on a GMG Daniel Boone. Its a great piece of kit. There's a review of mine on here somewhere.
So far I've only used the pellets that come from GMG, there's always the option to go for a different flavour pellet if you like but I really like the smoke from them and it goes with everything I've cooked so far.
The amount of smoke you get is easy to control. Just start it off on its lowest temp 70° the longer you hold it there the more smoke you're getting. I'm pretty sure some other models have actual smoke settings. I've never been fond of food that just tastes of smoke so I love the fact its so controllable.
To cook off grid just grab yourself a battery pack and inverter. I've run mine for over 12 hours with a leisure battery and 300w inverter with no problems.
Hope that helps somewhat
Nick

We use MAK Grills in competition...
http://www.makgrills.comNo issues getting enough smoke!

As far as power is concerned we use what is available onsite if it is reliable... if not we use a Honda 2000 watt inverter generator.

I've been using a modified Traeger Lil' Tex for some time now. It is used for social cooking (i.e. feeding friends and neighbours), I don't compete. It does everything I want from it. Although I also have a ceramic, I do almost everything on the Traeger, including breadmaking and pizza. I'm actually temporarily without a stove in my kitchen (long story), but everything is just going on the grill at the moment, and I have no complaints.
I buy some of my pellets from American BBQ/GMG, and can recommend them. However, I also buy from Liverpool Wood Pellets. They do the Lil' Devils brand, which is a blend of woods, but gives a good taste, and is quite a bit cheaper than GMG (although, to be fair, GMG's are more of a premium product). So I use different GMG pellets when I want to go for a specific taste, and Lil' Devils when I just need a generic smoke flavour, and heat. It helps keep the cost of the hobby down, although I don't find it that expensive anyway.
