Was just looking into remote thermometers as I might get the wife to buy me a new one for Xmas.

Looked on Amazon where they had the Maverick ET732 for £59.97, or the identical looking Ivation ET732 for £55.99

Anyone come across the Ivation before? Is that a genuine Maverick clone under another name, or should I avoid it?

Also, does anyone think it's really worth the extra £20 to get the 733 (£75 on Amazon)?

Hmm, very odd indeed! Never heard of them before. Although having just dealt with a rather rude and slow Maverick's customer service, if Ivation are UK based it might be better if something goes wrong! The difference in customer service between Maverick and Big Green Egg when a friends probe went wrong was rather shocking!

I invested in a Maverick (the 732) and found a site in the Netherlands that does spares if needed. I then bought a PartyQ from BBQ Guru and wish I had just gone for a forced air system rather than a remote thermometer set up.

Maybe I am just lazy but if I have one less thing to worry about (i.e. the pit temp) then I can concentrate on the meat more.

What BBQ are you use?

ConorD having both is better as should anything go wrong with the forced air system, the pit probe will recognise the drop in temp and you can check at a glance what is going on.

True and this is how I set it up but if you had to choose one which would you go for (genuine question no sarcasm);

1 - Forced air systems and keep the faith that it is working. My PartyQ is battery driven and the first few times I did over night cooks it ran out of batteries at about 4-5am. A decent set of rechargeables and swapping in a new set of batteries before I go to bed, on long cooks, sorted that out.

2 - a Probe which relies on you working vents as the temp both internally and externally fluctuates through the night - which led to a number of sleepless nights and some longer than anticipated cooks in the past.

I used to think that forced air systems were a form of cheating but now I put it down as my BBQ best buy.

As I've mentioned before, due to our location, end of terrace high fences etc, I couldn't use my ProQ without my IQue. However it's not infallible I'm on my second power-pack (luckily I had an Argos multi charger that fitted or Mr & Mrs Miller would have gone hungry) and the Maverick alerted me to the drop in temperature.
I suppose the only sure way is to win the lottery and employ someone to watch your smoker for you
