Hi,

Newbie to the forum and yet to fire up my newly aquired WSM 47.

I have been trying to get hold of some decent large joints for pulled pork and brisket.
Asda and Sainsburys are at £3 a kilo for pork shoulder at the moment but online the largest sainsburys go up to is 1.8kg, not sure about Asda yet. They are all boneless though.

Tried my local butcher for bone in shoulder but he wants £9 a kilo but I can have whatever size I want. A local farm wth a butcher will be around £6-7 a kilo.

Found a few sites online that deliver meat, has anyone used these sites or have any reviews on the service?

Nine quid a kilo bone in?!! I would just buy the smaller joints but buy more of them.

If you have a Morrisons nearby try them. They normally have a Butcher in store and they may have something in the fridge.

Regarding ordering meat on-line, two websites spring to mind:

I haven't personally used either but I have heard good feedback on both. Let us know if you do use them and if they were any good.

I found this site they sell a 3kg Boston Butt for £4.82 a kg.

They also have a 7 or 9 kg pork shoulder bone in for £3.42 a kg, you have to spend £75 for free delivery otherwise its £9.99

I think I will practice on some small joints from the supermarket before I try a larger joint.

If this weather continues I will have to build some sort of cover to use the smoker.

If you can wangle yourself a Booker or Makro card they'd be a decent bet for practise meats. Maybe ask around see if anyone has a card they would lend you. You'd be surprised how many people have them.
Toby already reviewed Booker frozen pork shoulders on the forum somewhere I believe and they're fine to practise with.

This made me chuckle Tommo. I asked in Morrisons about getting a bone in pork shoulder and was told "sorry pal, we just wrap it in plastic here, it comes pre cut". On another occasion I asked for the skin to be removed from a joint. Again I was told this wasn't possible.

So - men dressed as butchers under a sign that says butchers, that do no butchery? I can only hope Morrisons in other towns do better!

To the OP, regarding Makro / Booker - it's often easy enough to get a card, it depends who you work for. I work for the local uni, and for some reason that entitles me to a card. I find it is *just* slightly cheaper for me to buy from my local butcher, which is preferable for other obvious reasons, but Makro prices are pretty competetive and the meat is vac packed so it keeps for ages.

I have a Makro card managed to get the frozen ribs to try out this weekend.
I will have to look harder in the freezer section for pork shoulder.

Bookers seem to have a better meat selection online I may have to try and get a Bookers card aswell.

Both Makro & Booker have been mentioned here but what are I people's views on Costco Meat? I got a Costco card through work last year and I've been buying some meat to cook on the grill such as Rib Eye & Chicken and found it good quality.
I just got a WSM so will be looking to start cooking Pork Shoulder and Brisket soon which I know Costco stock as I've checked.

I do have a very good localish butcher but items like that I may have to pre-order and I can only get to on a Saturday. Costco is convenient as I drive past it on my way home from work and would require less forward planning.
