Just got a wsm and bought 3 bags of heat beads.
Says in operating manual lump charcoal and heat beads not recommended.
Why is that.

Probably to get you to use their briquettes. I have used all three and not had a problem

Almost certainly they disagree with anything that is not their brand. I have used heat beads for over a year now and never had any issues.

I've been using BigK lump wood charcoal in my WSM with no problems, I wouldn't worry about which charcoal you put in it so much as the quantity you need for a good 14 hour cook

As others have said lump or any brand of briquettes will be fine. Restaurant grade lumpwood charcoal or heat beads are regarded as the best.
