Hello from sunny SoCal

Postby funtimebbq » 08 Apr 2012, 19:08

Hi All,

Just wanted to come aboard and visit occasionally to see what my new friends Boss Hogg and Miss Piggy are up to.

My name is Benny. I live in Whittier CA and have been q'n competitively since 2006. I have many contests under my expanding belt with some recent success along with my wife as Funtime BBQ. I have visited "victory lane" many times as a member of Slap Yo Daddy BBQ team, but not yet as Funtime BBQ.

I hope to one day visit the UK and take in a contest.

Hey Benny, welcome on board.

Were you with Harry at the Royal in either 2009 or 2010? If so, I may have met briefly when i was out there with the BBBQS team, but I met so many people I've kind of lost track

Glad you've met up with Scott and Lyndz though, I expect they were great BBQ ambassadors for Blighty in SoCal.

No, neither year. In 09, Harry was there with his boyhood friend Mark Tung. They were filming the BBQ Pitmaster's series then. In 2010, SYD did not compete at the Royal. Although he had paid an entrance fee for the open (no fee for the invitational), he decided to stay closer to home. We competed in NoCal that weekend (RGC).

Must have been 09 when I popped by to say hello. It was my first time at a US competition and I remember wandering round the surprisingly massive site, not knowing who anyone one was and saying hello to anyone with either a beautiful cooker or a good team name. SYD was obviously one of those names that caught the eye :D

Although I think BBQ For Boobies was the one that grabbed me the mst

Welcome Benny, I have no competitions but can relate to the expanding belt .
Greatly looking forward to your input. Although to be fair if you want to cook Proper UK BBQ, turn your sprinklers on high, put your air-con outside on cold and don't forget to shiver when you shake your seasonings (hasn't stopped raining for a couple of days  )

I will confess, inclement weather is not something we worry too much about here. I have cooked in temps as low as 26 degrees F but that was a rare day. Rain is also not frequent but we are expecting some this weekend when Shari (my wife) and I cook at the Sam's Club event in San Diego. Scott, Lyndz and I had several conversations about the weather and the thing that would scare me the most is trying to keep mold off of all my stuff. I just leave my van loaded from about March through September. If I had to bring everything home and wipe it dry, I'd probably do 1/2 the contests. Hope I don't have to do that next weekend.

If anyone cooks on WSMs, I'd recommend purchasing the WSM silicone jacket from BBQ Guru. It fits over the WSM and helps protect it from all weather conditions while cooking. It also acts as insulation which reduces the amount of fuel needed to cook for long hours. I use it in cojunction with my Stoker system for perfect temp control.

Thanks for the welcome messages from everyone,

Benny

On another non bbq forum (yes there are some ;) ) a while ago an ex pat who joined the Canadian Police was absolutely furious that the temp had dropped to around -30 and his propane wouldn't light.....
(he posted pix from the previous weekend at -18 it looked like an eskimo feast)

Hi again everyone,

We competed in a contest at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. Hope these photos can be seen via the link below. I'm wearing the shirt given to me by Scott and Lyndz Lane of Miss Piggy's BBQ on their visit to CA last month.

Hi Benny,
So sorry I missed this thread when you first posted. Congratulations again on the weekends success. When I saw you had 3 calls I felt sure you would be GC.
