Postby chunkallmighty » 02 Sep 2012, 08:24

Hey everyone, bin a bbq fan for years but only discovered smoking a year or so ago, I've got a oil barrel grill and have just finished building a oil barrel offset reverse flow which is working great and I'm looking forward to all your advice and help and sharing my food with you. Is anyone else from stoke would be good to see were other folks get meat coal and wood from. Adam

Hey Adam
Nice to see a local on here. I live in Newcastle u Lyme.
I tend to get almost all of my meat from Greens abattoir up near Goldenhill though I've just snagged a Cost-co card and an extra freezer :-)
I cook mostly on pellets now but when I buy charcoal I'm getting the blue bag stuff from makro on park house industrial estate. If you don't have a makro card but want some anyway I'm sure we can sort something out. If its more briquettes you're after look up CPL distribution. They tend to carry loads and have a depot in Wolstanton.

I don't know much about the drum smokers but if there's anything else I can do give me a yell

ah nice. I used to live on The Avenue, just off Basford bank. Now live in Ches.
Yep, I get my pork shoulders (butts) from Greens. took me a few attempts to get the right cut of meat I was after. Depending on which butcher you get they call it a pork collar in there. They sell them for around £1 per lb. I'll be going up myself maybe tomorrow or Friday. Want to see if they can cut me a decent brisket.

You might want to try Hartshill butchers too. They seem really enthusiastic when I've been in there. Had some joy with the ribs they have. Needed bit of trimming, but getting big racks of spare ribs for around £4. I phone a few days in advance to make sure he has them.
