The Royal

Thought it would be good to have a thread on here for you lucky lot that are going to the Royal to keep us all informed of your preparations etc. I for one don't really know anything about the lead-up and the competition itself and would find it really interesting, I'm sure other members would too. For starters who's going and are you all cooking something?

Good idea Scott!

My prep for this year started in Oct last year. We learned that our neighbours at the Royal were having a baby so we picked up some baby tops and had them embroidered with representative team logos. We have few other visits to make whilst out there but in essence the admin of booking flights, hotels etc is fairly simple. Toby's role is much more hectic!!!

Toby arranges the accommodation in terms of bookings, books and orders the comp events, arranges on site RV, cooking equipment, meats, etc

I essentially pack light for the trip out, take clothes I will throw on return so I have more weight for rubs n toys to bring back.

We compete in both Invitational and open under "The British BBQ Society". It will be an annual event, and gives people a chance to experience a real American competiiton.

Nah, Jackie bailed on us this year

As far as I'm aware it's not been fully decided who's cooking what on the side dishes yet. Everyone's been asked what they want to do and if more than one person volunteers for each category we have a cook-off to decide which entry goes in.

We did this with the sausage last year.

I've volunteered to do sausage and potato, but I don't know what the score is with others yet.

The Team for this years Royal Is

Toby Shea British BBQ Society Team Captain
Adie Platts Bite The Bullet
Steve Heyes Royal Q
Chris McQuillan Stick The Kettle On
Neil Welsh Royal Q
Ben Cops BBQ Fanatics
Cuan Brown BBQ Fanatics

I will be running the main show, Brisket, Pork, Ribs and Chicken, for the Invitational, and for the open we will probably change a few things.

Sides are still up in the air, but I have no doubt that this will be decided in the next few hours.
