Hi from Peckham

Postby gingerchris » 21 Jan 2014, 15:47

Hi all,

I've been watching watching too much BBQ Pitmasters on Netflix and have decided to get a bit serious with BBQ this year. I built a terracotta smoker last summer, but using charcoal instead of electric which was great until I over filled my fire basket and cracked the bottom out of it.

I'm signed up to the grassroots course in May and can't wait!
Look forward to meeting and learning from some of you,

Chris

Thanks for the welcomes!

I think I'm just going to replace my broken terracotta pot initially, at least until I've had a look at what others are using at Mayhem in May. I'm currently looking for a metalworking evening course as I'd like to build something myself but I think that's a fair way off as I currently don't have a clue.

I got a Raspberry Pi for Christmas and am quite keen on trying to turn it into a heatermeter or something similar.

I'm also currently investigating using the pi as a heat controller. I want to be sure it will be cheaper and as effective as an iq110 before i bother starting anything though! Rest assured, if I do try, I will post on here.

Consider building a UDS. No need for any metalworking, any old fool with some tools can make one, it's cheap, and it's an incredibly good smoker.

@rob I've spent a while looking at that heatermeter project and it does look like the Pi was an afterthought and is just used to broadcast the data. I was wondering about getting something like an iGrill and using the Pi to pick up the readings from that? I'll share anything I figure out on here as well. Are there any other threads discussing similar topics?

I think a UDS might be on the cards. I'm very keen to learn some metalworking anyway so there's no reason I can't do both!

@keith @conor thanks for the welcome - I'm really looking forward to May. My family lives in Tongham and I can't believe I only just found out about this. My sister can probably smell the cook from her house!
