Piling on the weight - the confession thread!

Postby robgunby » 07 Mar 2014, 18:07

Ok, so I fess up. I have put on god knows how much weight, but have gained 4" on my waistline since I started smoking food a few years ago.

I'm quite a sedentary lad - I guess that's why slow cooking appeals! I ride a bike occasionally but I'm not the sporty type, so any culinary hobby is bound to have disastrous effects on my belly, especially one as fatty as barbecueing!

Has anyone else found they have ballooned as a result of their devotion to barbecue, or am I a lone fatty? :D

I also found my weight creeping up year on year, but with heart disease prevalent in my family I decided I had to do something about it.

What works for me is cutting out snacks and anything with sugar in it during the week (That includes alcohol!) and then eating & drinking whatever I want on the weekend.

Exercise is optional, as it is your diet that really makes the difference.

I've lost just over 1 stone in the last 12 months and it continues to trickle off.

It's real easy to fit into my lifestyle, so it's easy to maintain, and that's the trick IMHO.

Depends how much you eat on the bbq days!

Your reference to WW on the smoker is probably the only time I've not felt appetised by the suggestion of smoking something.....

Pete - you're absolutely right about the snacks, sugar and booze. It mounts up to a big pile of calories! I'm going teetotal for a while next week, so hopefully that will take some effect.

My ma and pa embarked on the 5:2 diet a couple of years ago and lost loads of weight, I considered doing this myself but I can't go any further than 6:1 and that doesn't work as well ;)

Yes I have to confess my weight has crept up a bit the last couple of years and at 15 stone I need to reign it in a bit.

Problem for me is a love all sorts of food and one of the wonderful things for us in this country these days is we are exposed to fantastic flavors and such a variety of food.

One of the reasons I like to cook is that I can control quality of the ingredients along with the amount of fat and sugar that is in what I eat. The thing is it all tastes so good that keeping portions under control is my problem.

I tend to eat a lot of salads and the like with my BBQ so overall it shouldn't be any worse than other things that I eat.

That's not strictly true, although very true for getting the weight off. The added benefit of cardiovascular fitness comes from exercise, so you could be carrying some extra fat but still have a healthy set of lungs and heart or you could be carrying the same amount of fat but your CV system might be struggling.

I hit the gym every morning before work, I'm not lean and chiseled by any stretch but I'm happy that at least my system is running OK (I hope).

Chaps, it is with all things moderation, a balance of the hearty yang of beef and the finesse ying of slaw, my name is somewhat ironic as I once topped out at a tad under 35 stone, which most doctors agree is a smidgeon on the heavy side.

So I undertook a zen like journey over the last 3 years of denial and hardship, equally balanced with meaty based excess.

As the new Q season approaches I intend to put the high protein and low carb approach at the heart of my challenge to lose the last 5 stones, I have shed 11 stones thus far.

So a mix of healthy living and good bbq can lead you to this balanced affair, so go well and eat some ribs

Cheers
Tiny
PS Also had gastric bypass surgery,, although I am not sure how much this contributed..... :)
