Hi all, newbie made a purchase

Postby Dodge » 15 Aug 2014, 21:16

Hi, im Chris from Kent.

I have always loved a good Bbq on a nice day with friends and family, and of course a few beers :D

Only ever used the cheapo bbq's, but always got by, and had a lot of fun. Usually buy one for around £25 every year which ends up going to the tip by October, done the same this year.....until now.

After seeing a few smoking vids on youtube, i decided that i like to give it ago, and have some real tasty food all year round.

Inspired by the youtube vids, i started looking around for an offset smoker. All i could find was mickey mouse ones on eBay etc. I thought about it, and decided a cheap one would more than likely be a waste of time as it wouldn't hold the heat, and i would end up getting fed up with it.

Anyway, i finally decided to go for a Weber one touch premium and a smokenator, as it seemed a good choice for some grilling and smoking action. I realise its not the best in the world for smoking, but after spending around £250, i hope it was a good choice to get used to smoking, and even if all fails, i still have a great grill that will last me a bit longer than a few months.

I also ordered some Weber long lasting briquettes, which was recommended to me.

My order should be here next week. Im very excited and can't wait to get started.

Have i made a bad purchase with the bbq and the charcoals?

Oh, i also ordered some wood from Paul, now i've gone with the smokenator, this wood should last me monthsssss.

I have never smoked before, so any advise is very welcome.

Chris :D

Good choice, a cheap offset will just cause you heartache, the weber kettle is a sound choice, especially when paired with the smokenator. Charcoal is just a matter of preference as long as it's not easy lighting it should be fine, lots like weber, i prefer BigK but that's just me.

Hi and welcome

I use the Weber (white bag) i do like it as i usually get a good sleep with it, i always do my long cooks over night. The only thing is it leaves a yellow ash.
Some have said it gets on the food but ive never had any ash that ive seen or tasted on my food..........yet!!

Im hoping to get a one touch premium this month to go along side my Pro Q Frontier.

Good luck

I sometimes suffer with ash getting on food when using my Jumbo Joe (grates sit a bit closer to the coals). I try to 'roll" the lid off rather than pull the lid upwards to try and avoid suction drawing ash up, sometimes successful, sometimes not :)

Gone through a bag of the Weber, and and its not good when used with the one touch due to the yellow ash going everywhere when lid opens, i clear the bottom vents holes or when i bash off the dead ash through the smokenator holes.

Wont be using those briquettes again.

Great purchase. I have a Weber original that I bought 10 years ago and it's still in perfect nick. It lives outside without a cover and all I've done is replace the grill once (maybe twice).
